Before freezers and refrigerators, snow and ice were one of the few alternatives available for refrigeration, so, for years, their collection was adapted to various processes that ensured their production, storage and distribution. In Portugal, this network operated essentially between two hubs: initially in the north, in Castanheira de Pera, on Lousã Mountain, and later in the center, in Cadaval, on Montejunto Mountain. From there, the ice traveled a long and laborious road to reach Lisbon, where it was used to make ice creams and refreshments, satisfying the desires of the most illustrious members of the court and, later, the population itself. In this sense, landmarks such as the neveiros of Castanheira de Pera and the Royal Ice Factory of Cadaval represent a heritage of great historical value for the country, and it makes perfect sense to create initiatives and an identity that unites them.
The Rota do Neveiro brand thus aims to pay tribute to all those who made it possible to supply ice, reflecting on the route taken to the capital and the connection between two poles that share the same past. A heritage frozen in time, but which is intended to be thawed and appreciated by those seeking to learn a little more about the municipalities of Cadaval and Castanheira de Pera, and to experience all the history that has taken root along their paths.
